Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are frequently used to relieve joint pain and inflammation in horses. While effective, NSAIDs as a class do not allow for targeted application and are associated with gastrointestinal and renal toxicity.
Surpass offers the strength of an NSAID and the precision of an injection—without
the needle.
Surpass is designed to ease the minds of horse owners, while alleviating the pain and discomfort of their horses. In a recent survey, 68% of horse owners and trainers cited gastric ulcers as a concern when administering NSAIDs, and 38% reported a similar concern with kidney failure.1
Surpass is a unique topical cream, formulated to be applied only where treatment is needed, which limits the amount of active ingredient that enters the bloodstream.
Because Surpass is a Boehringer Ingelheim product, it’s sold only through licensed veterinarians.
Surpass is the only FDA-approved veterinary product that contains diclofenac, a potent pain reducer and anti-inflammatory agent, and has been shown to improve lameness in arthritic joints.2 Through its unique WISDOM™ liposomal delivery technology, Surpass releases tiny, dissolvable bubbles containing diclofenac directly at the site of inflammation.
NSAIDs may be associated with gastrointestinal and renal toxicity. When NSAIDs inhibit prostaglandins that cause inflammation, they may also inhibit prostaglandins that maintain normal homeostatic function. These anti-prostaglandin effects may result in clinically significant disease in patients with underlying or preexisting disease more often than in healthy patients. Patients at greatest risk for renal toxicity are those that are dehydrated, on concomitant diuretic therapy, or those with renal, cardiovascular and/or hepatic dysfunction.

"Several owners and trainers I know don’t like to use injections. With Surpass, they can treat the site of the pain like an injectable, but in a way they can feel good about… The skeptics are consistently amazed. The results were better than injectables that we used…"
